Former Dodgers Reliever Shelby Miller Signing With Detroit Tigers

Dodgers free agent relief pitcher Shelby Miller will not be returning to the team for the 2024 season. He has agreed to a deal with the Detroit Tigers on a one-year deal. Kiley McDaniel of ESPN was the first to break the news.

Miller was one of the better relievers for the Dodgers last season, posting an ERA of 1.71 in 36 games. He struck out 42 batters over 42 innings of work and posted a WHIP of 0.90.

The veteran reliever dealt with some injury issues throughout the season, most notably a neck problem. It forced him to miss a good amount of time in the middle of the season, but he was able to return for the stretch run.

Miller showed that he could still be a productive pitcher in the big leagues, and will be looking to replicate his success next season. He struck out batters at a 25.8% clip last season and was typically very good at keeping the ball on the ground.

He introduced a new splitter to his pitching arsenal, which seemed to be very effective against opposing hitters. The Dodgers worked their pitching magic on Miller, and it helped him resurrect his career.

The Tigers have been very active this offseason building out their pitching staff, and Miller brings more veteran presence to the table.

It’s just a coincidence, but Miller signed just hours after the Dodgers and Yoshinobu Yamamoto agreed to a deal. Yamamoto will wear No. 18, the jersey Miller had in Los Angeles last season.

  1. Rumor was Shelby would not give up #18 like Kelly gave up #17. Someone told him he needed to let it go or he was gone. (Just kidding hope the best for him)
