Kiké Hernandez Was Almost Suspended for Cursing During Dodgers Postseason Run

Kiké Hernández almost missed a game of the National League Championship Series. 

During a live interview with FOX’s Ken Rosenthal, Hernández used profane language while on the air on national television. The interview followed the Dodgers’ series-winning victory in Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres.

Rosenthal asked Hernández what makes this Dodgers team different from other ones. In response, Hernández said, “The fact that we don’t give a f—.” Hernández found himself in some trouble after his comment, including a potential game suspension and a fine.

“I was going to get an even heftier fine, and I was going to get a game suspension, but having a good agent and having a good player union came in handy,” Hernández said in an interview with The Shop on YouTube. “They got rid of the suspension, and they got to lower the fine a little bit, which was good. I did have to apologize which, you could say 50/50 on the honesty part of it.”

Hernández greatly impacted the Dodgers’ win with a solo home run in the second inning of Game 5, accounting for half of the Dodgers’ runs that game. He said his answer to Rosenthal following the 2-0 victory was his genuine belief.

“What I answered was the honest answer from the bottom of my heart and I didn’t think there was any other way of describing the team,” he explained. “I felt like I had already taken a while to think about my answer, because I didn’t want to answer it that way. When I asked if we were live he said yes and I figured ‘there’s got to be some sort of delay.’ There was no delay and I was on live TV cussing. And there was a lot of criticizing that.”

Although Hernández’s choice of words was met with criticism, he does not regret his answer. In fact, he thinks his answer amplified the energy of Dodgers fans throughout the rest of the postseason. 

“I think it made the postseason run a little more epic for fans because they bought into that, they bought into that mentality, and they had fun with it too,” he said.

It remains undetermined whether Hernández will return to Los Angeles next season. But, as of now, he is still available in the free agent market.
