MLB News: Commissioner Warns MLBPA of Shutdown if Virus Cannot Be Contained

Fridays are normally reserved for happiness, but not on this particular day. In the wake of the Marlins outbreak of COVID-19 numbers, MLB is making a strong statement to the MLBPA. That statement is ‘Do a better job, or lose baseball for the year’.

Commissioner Rob Manfred apparently wrote to head of MLBPA Tony Clark this week about the climbing numbers. He told Clark that if the sport does not do a better job of managing the virus that the season would shut down for the year.

This coming weekend might end up being one of the biggest for the entire season. With the Marlins players still quarantined and not playing, numbers cannot go up. A couple of Phillies players tested positive Friday morning resulting in a sense of urgency for MLB.

If another outbreak comes to be, Rob Manfred has the power to shut baseball down. Manfred noted that local health officials have not been satisfied with the way players have stuck to the guidelines thus far. That includes high-fiving, the closeness of players on the field and in the dugouts, and with spitting.

The Cardinals games against the Brewers tonight was postponed and a doubleheader was scheduled for tomorrow. If more numbers come out this weekend, don’t expect baseball on your television much longer. So much depends on how these guys will be able to adjust.

  1. So what is the next step? How about releasing players who put their entire teams at risk – as the Marlins allegedly did – by going out and partying? At the very least, if their actions lead to teams having to miss games, they should be docked pay for those games. There has to be some sort of consequences, right? Or do we just watch the entire season implode because teams don’t want to be the “bad guys” by enforcing curfews?

  2. In the old days, when you’re in a contract and you went as a team, you went everywhere as a team. Why don’t they do that now? But with everything going on stay away from all others, no mingling, no signing autographs, no high 5’s with other people. have a plan as a team where ever you go, with exclusions, good behavior. This will keep the virus away. If you don’t value your lives then you don’t value anybody else’s, even your own family.

  3. Before this season started, I put the odds of completing it through a world series championship at 15%. I still think that’s about right. Manfred is a corrupt moron. The players Union is a bunch of selfish jerks. These guys are out of control, and certainly out of my control. So I’m just going to enjoy whatever games the Dodgers play, for as long as they play.

  4. WHY IN THE HELL NO JUST REMOVE THE MARLINS FROM PLAYING @ ALL THIS SEASON, NOT FAIR TO ALL TEAMS THAT CAN PLAY TO SHUT IT ALL DOWN. MANFRED DOES NOT SEE TO JUST PUNISH THE GULITY TEAM.
