MLB News: Padres Sign Free Agent Shortstop Jose Iglesias to Minor League Deal

The free agent saga for Jose Iglesias quickly came to an end. After opting out of a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins last week, the shortstop was briefly connected to the Dodgers who have/had a clear need for help at the shortstop position. Instead, the veteran infielder agreed to a minor league deal with the rival Padres.

MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand reported the deal first.

The Dodgers were never really expected to be players in the Iglesias sweepstakes but the need was obvious. Now the 2015 AL All-Star joins a Padres roster that has a shortstop at first base, second base, third base, and in right field on a nightly basis. Plus the guy that actually plays shortstop for them, Xander Bogaerts whom they signed to a mega deal in the offseason.

It’s hard to see where he fits in the Padres picture, but he’ll head to Triple-A El Paso and try to find a way onto the active roster.

Don’t The Dodgers Still Need Help at Shortstop?

Every team could always use more help up the middle, but the front office seems content with giving Mookie Betts a runway at the position — he’s started each of the last two games for the Dodgers at short — at least until Miguel Rojas returns from the injured list, which should be this Friday. Additionally, Chris Taylor should expect to see more time at the position as the season goes along.
