Mookie Betts Isn’t Fazed By Extra Media Attention Surrounding Dodgers This Season

The Dodgers offseason was spent bringing in more talent than any other club in baseball. They were able to add pieces to the team that give them an extra edge, including the biggest star in the game today, two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Since his signing, everything that Ohtani has done has been nothing short of a media firestorm. He had one of the most watched introductory press conferences, his media scrums are tens of people deep and people leave Mookie Betts’ batting practice so they don’t miss Ohtani’s.

The media already covered the Dodgers more than other teams. Stands to reason, as they have some of the game’s biggest stars and are one of the winningest organizations in recent history.

However, this offseason has shown an entirely new level of media presence. Now, the Japanese media have joined the ranks of the usual media outlets at every corner.

Thus far, the players have handled it well, albeit a little tongue-in-cheek about it. In South Korea, when Betts was asked about this, he didn’t seem fazed by the attention.

It’s been a lot, but it’s cool. It’s kind of what comes when you get somebody like [Ohtani], an international star.

This seems to be the mindset of the Dodgers players who have commented about this so far. They all seem to note how many cameras there are, but then pivot to how they can block out the noise.

They’ll need to carry this mentality moving forward through the season, and possibly into future seasons as well. Each move the team makes, good or bad, will be dissected with surgical precision.
