Mookie Betts Out of Dodgers Lineup One Day After Walk Off Home Run

After hitting a walk-off home run Friday night, Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts is out of Saturday’s lineup.

The Dodgers are giving a well-deserved day off to Betts. Veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas will replace the Dodgers superstar in the lineup.

For the past three weeks, Betts had battled a severe stomach illness which sidelined him since the final two games of Cactus League. The 32-year-old had lost nearly 20 pounds, but insisted on returning to the lineup.

“So looks like I’m just going to be light for a little bit,” Betts said last week. “Maybe I play uphill a little bit for the beginning of the season. But I just want to play, man. I’m tired of sitting, tired of just throwing up, tired of doing all this. I just really just want to play.”

Although Betts is playing underweight, he had no problem hitting two home runs in Friday night’s comeback victory against Detroit. After enduring a health trial, Betts persevered and became the Dodgers’ unlikely hero with a walk-off homer in the tenth inning.

“That was super special. I know it sounds super selfish, but just more for me. I was really proud of myself for coming in and playing underweight,” Betts said. “Not that it’s a big deal to play underweight, but just the fight that I’ve kind of been through — the ups and downs, the nights where I’m just crying because I’m sick. My wife was there just kind of holding me. And so that’s really where that emotion kind of comes from. Then obviously winning for the boys.”
