Mookie Betts ‘Super Excited’ to Play Second Base Every Day for Dodgers

Entering the 2024 season, the Dodgers will have a new everyday second baseman. That would be star Mookie Betts, who will be making the transition from the outfield to full-time infield going forward.

Betts has played in the infield previously, including last season. But the move to make him the everyday second baseman is one to help with the flexibility of the roster and to help limit extra wear and tear on his body.

He has enjoyed playing in the infield in the past, so this will be a new adventure for Betts on a daily basis. The star caught up with SportsNet LA to detail what makes him so excited about getting to play on the dirt.

“I’m ecstatic about it. I’m super excited about it. But you know, I do what I can just to help the team win. We’ve got J-Hey out there, who’s got just as many Gold Gloves as I do, so we’re not really missing much out there in right field. But we have a really good team, a really good outfield. It’ll be a lot of fun to get to go back to my roots.”

Betts is all about helping the team win in any way that he can. This move for him is another example of that fact, and he will be going back to his old ways. He came up into the big leagues as an infielder before moving to the outfield.

Betts was asked how long it would take for him to establish a relationship with shortstop Gavin Lux, who is coming back off tearing his ACL last spring training.

“I don’t think very long at all. We already have a really good relationship. I have a really good relationship but especially G. I don’t think it’ll take long. Probably a week or so.”

The two men have been in the Dodgers organization for years together, so they should know each other well. It may take a little time to build the chemistry, but both are professionals at what they do.
