Shohei Ohtani’s Surgery Rehab Will Limit Him Early In Spring Training, Dodgers GM Says

The Dodgers’ signing of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani was a long time coming, but the front office finally was able to land him. After multiple attempts over the years, Ohtani is signed on with the Dodgers for the next 10 seasons.

He won’t be pitching this coming year while he recovers from a torn UCL, but he will be taking over as the designated hitter for the team. The hype around the signing of Ohtani is unlike anything that the organization has seen before, and the start of the season can’t get here sooner.

However, with the recovery from him having surgery, Ohtani is expected to have some limitations. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes revealed that Ohtani will be limited early in Spring Training due to his rehab process.

“Probably a little bit at the beginning.”

The Dodgers want to make sure that Ohtani doesn’t injure himself even more, so they will likely be cautious to start. He is their big investment for the next decade, so they aren’t going to take any chances with him.

Gomes added that Ohtani is feeling good overall and that the team isn’t focused on getting him back into pitching shape at this time. With him only focusing on hitting this year, there is plenty of time for the staff to work him up to pitching shape.

“We haven’t totally sat down and mapped that out yet. We’re going to be focused on the hitting portion of it.”

Ohtani adds major star power to this lineup that already has two National League MVP candidates within it. The Dodgers are absolutely loaded for the 2024 season, and they all have their sights set on winning another World Series title.
