Dave Roberts Calls NRI Pitcher a ‘Surprise’ So Far in Spring For Dodgers

The Dodgers might have found their next reclamation project for this year. They signed veteran left-handed relief pitcher Justin Wilson on a minor league deal earlier this spring. In limited appearances, he has seemingly impressed the coaching staff.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to members of the media, including Bill Plunkett of the O.C. Register, and praised Wilson for his performances coming back from injury,

“Coming back from some injuries, he’s really been a surprise. Obviously, signing him, we didn’t know what to expect, because he hasn’t pitched competitively for a couple years at the major-league level. So I don’t know his status. I just know that when he gets out there, I get excited watching him throw.”

Wilson, 36, last made an MLB appearance in 2022 with the Cincinnati Reds. He appeared in five games that season before undergoing Tommy John surgery which would sideline him for all of the 2023 season.

He has three pitches in his arsenal — a four-seam fastball, cutter, and slider — and relies most heavily on his fastball.

This spring, the southpaw has thrown four innings, given up two earned runs, and struck out nine batters. That fastball has certainly looked the part in his appearances so far.

He does have an opportunity to break camp with the team for the Seoul series. With the team only needing two starting pitchers, the Dodgers might elect to carry more relievers than normal.

If he performs well, he could force his way onto the roster heading further into the season.
