Dave Roberts Hints at Dodgers Making Roster Move Ahead of Series Finale vs Cubs

Even though we’re only in April, the same story appears to be popping up as it pertains to the Dodgers’ pitching staff.

The presence of pre-existing injuries, current injuries, and perpetual waiting for guys to return from injury has already categorized the start to the season thus far.

The Dodgers (16-8) are coming off a tough 11-10 extra innings loss to the Cubs in Chicago. Starter Dustin May was tagged for seven earned runs. Closer Tanner Scott was uneven again — giving up a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning. Mercenary arm Noah Davis gave up the walk-off hit to Ian Happ to end the game.

While things are far from dire, there’s some annoyance going on currently with a host of bullpen arms still down (Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol, Blake Treinen) and several starting pitchers (Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, Shohei Ohtani) still working their way back.

A starter has not been named for the finale in the Chicago series on Wednesday evening, as the team is planning on a bullpen game. Having said that, manager Dave Roberts spoke to the media after the game and made it sound like someone could be coming up.

“There might be a pending move for some length potentially,” Roberts said. “But I’m gonna talk to the pitching guys here shortly and figure out where we’re at.”

Who that arm is providing the presumed length remains to be seen, though we can assume at worst its someone capable of going multiple innings whether a true starting pitcher or a long reliever.

Whomever is called up, Roberts and the Dodgers are hoping they can provide some quality innings to give its already-taxed bullpen a bit of a rest.

The Dodgers have an off-day on Thursday, so it will likely be all hands on deck to come away with a win in Wednesday’s series finale.
