Dave Roberts Still Views Miguel Vargas as Part of Dodgers’ Future

When Miguel Vargas entered Spring Training last season, he was asked to play second base. The Dodgers needed someone to play there regularly, especially after Gavin Lux went down with a season-ending knee injury in spring training and Miguel Rojas had to play shortstop.

This year, Vargas has been asked to transition to left field because playing time everywhere else is extremely limited.

Manager Dave Roberts hasn’t spoken to Vargas about last season, or his status for this season, but he has offered him some advice: “control what you can control.”

“I think last year was certainly a learning experience for him. I think he even said, at some point, he lost some confidence. But this spring, he looks fantastic. And I don’t know how it’s gonna play out when we break camp. But Miguel is still a big part of what we’re doing now, and going forward.”

Vargas doesn’t know where he might fit into the lineup best, but he wants to be a part of this team however he can.

“I don’t know. That’s the answer I have to find out. I want to come in here and be me. I can’t control that (roster decisions). I just have to control what I can. Obviously I want to be part of this team and be what I can be.”

The Dodgers will start figuring out what the roster looks like when Cactus League play opens against the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

If Vargas gets the opportunity to play, he will make the most of it. He might need an injury to crack the Opening Day roster, but at least Vargas will have a chance to make a strong impression.
