Dodgers Favorites to Land Top Shortstop Wilman Diaz in the International Free Agent Class

The Dodgers have always had a knack for landing top talent in the international free-agent market. Guys like Julio Urias, Victor Gonzalez, and Yasiel Puig are just some of their recent successes. But Los Angeles might be on the verge of adding another huge talent in Wilman Diaz.

Diaz is rated out as the best shortstop available on the International market. He is from Venezuela and playing out of the same program that produced Diego Cartaya, Los Angeles’ #5 prospect in the organization. The Dodgers are reportedly expected to sign the young shortstop, who might be the best teenager in the entire class.

Scouts view Diaz as a guy with 5-tool potential at just 17 years of age. He has demonstrated the ability to hit the ball the other way, but also features a natural loft in his pull-side swing. His ability to hit right now is what really impresses the Dodgers and teams around the big leagues at the moment.

Defensively, Diaz shows the potential to be a plus-glove with a plus-arm at shortstop. Diaz is also rated out as a fast runner with the ability to steal bases. Long-term, he will likely fill out a little bit as he is current 6-foot-2 and just over 170 lbs. If his athleticism stays the same or improves as he continues to develop, the Dodgers could have something special on their hands.

  1. Thanks Brook, I would rather read informational pieces like this than the wild speculative stories that get circulated. I can honestly say I did not see this info on any other site so it is good reporting!

    1. Go to Baseball America and you can read about all of the potential Dodgers international signings — as well as other teams

  2. You can never have too many weapons in your arsenal. And with Seager, free agency, injuries, or just the desire to have a change of scenery, could hit us without a solid shortstop. Better to have a young man in the system and not need him, than to need him and not have him. Go Blue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
