Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman Had ‘Mishap’ in Shower, Out for Dodgers After Tweaking Already Injured Ankle

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without superstar Freddie Freeman Monday evening against his former team, the Atlanta Braves.

Manager Dave Roberts spoke to reporters pregame and revealed why the World Series MVP was out of the lineup.

A “mishap” when getting into the shower caused Freeman to tweak the same ankle that required offseason surgery. He is now day to day, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

Freeman’s right ankle first became an issue on the day that the Dodgers clinched the NL West last September against the San Diego Padres. He turned his ankle while trying to avoid a throw while running to first base, and suffered an injury that should have put him on the IL for four to six weeks.

The injuries did not stop there, though, as Freeman also revealed that he was playing through a broken costal cartilage in his sixth rib discovered a few days before the NLDS.

The rib injury started to flare up in Japan, keeping him out of the first two games of 2025, but was later revealed to be a build-up of scar tissue in the area and a non-factor to his health.

As for his ankle, Freeman still wasn’t happy with it when talking to reporters last month during spring training despite an offseason surgery.

“I wish it felt like the left one, but it doesn’t,” Freeman said. “Lower-body injuries are hard to rehab, especially the ankle, so I do believe it’s gonna be a lot more treatment-wise than I would like.”

Freeman proved in the World Series with his four home runs and MLB’s first-ever walk-off grand slam that he is more than capable of playing through these ailments that would sideline a mortal man, but for a March regular season games, it makes sense that the team will err on the side of caution.

In his three games of the 2025 campaign so far, Freeman has three hits, two home runs, and four RBIs in just 12 at-bats. The Dodgers will look to continue their undefeated season without their superstar first baseman, at least for Monday’s game.
