Dodgers’ Jason Heyward Sidelined With Back Tightness
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Jason Heyward has been dealing with back tightness since the exhibition Freeway Series. It has carried over into the regular season and he is expected to miss Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
After being scratched from Monday’s game, Heyward left Dodger Stadium three hours before the first pitch to see Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles for further testing.
“Yesterday as he was getting loose during the game, he just had a harder time getting ready,” Roberts said Monday. “Today he came in a little sore, stiff, so we decided to give him a day. He won’t be available tonight, and we’ll see tomorrow how he comes out.”
Heyward was originally slated to start Monday night’s game against Giants right-hander Keaton Winn. The plan coming into the season was to give Heyward starts against right-handed pitching. Last season he hit .276 against right-handers compared to .192 against lefties.
Overall last year, Heyward slashed .269/.340/.473 with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs. So far this season, he is batting .214 with three singles in 14 at-bats with two RBIs and three runs scored. He was 1-for-8 in his two games against the Cardinals.
With Heyward out, Chris Taylor is starting in his place. On Sunday night, Taylor was 1-for-1 with three walks, a run scored, and an RBI. He is batting .111 this season with one hit in nine at-bats.
