Dodgers: Joe Davis Leading Candidate to Replace Joe Buck at MLB Fox

Not all of the big news for baseball this week has been about the return of baseball and free agency movement. According to sources, longtime football and baseball announcer Joe Buck is leaving Fox Sports for ESPN. The move could lead to Dodgers television play-by-play broadcaster Joe Davis taking over Buck’s role as the lead announcer for Fox’s MLB coverage.

Per the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, Davis is the top candidate to slide into Buck’s role.

“Buck has been the voice of the World Series for 24 years. Joe Davis is the clear favorite, according to sources, to be offered the lead MLB job. Other candidates could include Adam Amin internally and ESPN’s Dan Shulman and MLB Network’s Matt Vasgersian.”

Presumably, Davis would stay on as the primary play-by-play announcer for Dodgers games on SportNet LA, but would likely cover Fox’s weekly Saturday showcase game. It would also mean that Davis would be calling World Series games. Davis has previously called playoff games for Fox, including Game 7 of the 2020 NLCS that featured the Dodgers and the Braves.

If he does get the lead Fox MLB job, Davis might have to reconcile his fears about announcing Dodgers playoff games on national television.

In addition to potentially taking the top spot for Fox MLB coverage, Buck’s departure could also lead to Davis being elevated to the number two spot in the network’s NFL announcing hierarchy.

“If [Kevin] Burkhardt is promoted to the No. 1 NFL team, the No. 2 spot will open which Amin, Davis and possibly college football play-by-player Gus Johnson could be considered to occupy.”

Davis’ promotion would be another chapter in his meteoric rise in the broadcast industry. The 34-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the premier play-by-play announcers in the country.

Dodgers fans should be all for Davis’ continued success, as long it doesn’t move him out of the SportNet LA booth permanently.
