The young outfielder was designated for assignment by the A’s this week, and now winds up in Los Angeles, a team looking for outfield depth.

Ruiz stole an American-League-best 67 bases in 2023. While he’s struggled to hit at the MLB level — with a career OPS of .641 — you can’t teach speed, and the Dodgers are taking a chance on the 26-year-old outfielder.

According to Gonzalez, Ruiz will head to Triple-A, as he still has minor league options.

As for the return, the Dodgers are sending right-handed pitching prospect Carlos Duran to the A’s.

Duran is a 23-year-old pitching prospect who opened the year in the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets’ rotation, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing one run while striking out eight. For more on Duran, click here.

As for Ruiz, the Dodgers will hope to develop his bat into being a serviceable Major League player. The young outfielder has shown a ton of promise at the MLB level, and is still just 26 years old.

Across nine minor league seasons, Ruiz has a career slash line of .288/.366/.462 with 57 home runs, 278 RBIs, 255 stolen bases and an OPS of .829.
