Player of the Day – Jonathan Martinez
After an excellent debut, Jonathan Martinez cooled off, allowing four runs or more three times in his next five starts. However, he’s since begun to turn things around, surrendering just one run in each of his last three outings.
The 19-year-old Venezuelan now sees his ERA at a comfortable 3.35 and he’s walked just six batters in 51 innings, including four straight starts with no walks allowed. Martinez doesn’t have swing-and-miss stuff, but he’s succeeded with excellent control and is young enough to see his pure stuff improve.
