Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw Activated to Pitch Tonight

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are kicking off a 3-game series starting tonight in Los Angeles. They’ll be looking to at least keep pace but hopefully gain ground on the Giants who lead by 2.5 games in the west. They’ll need some help from San Diego tonight as they take on San Francisco.

But the Dodgers get a familiar face back on the mound for this one tonight. Clayton Kershaw hit the injured list before the All-Star break with an elbow issue and has yet to pitch since then. He did throw in one rehab game last week before getting the all-clear from the medical staff.

The expectation is that Kershaw will go 4 innings tonight. With only the one rehab start under his belt, he will need some time to get built back up. But Dave Roberts did say that he expects him to get around 4 starts before the year is over, meaning that he has time to fully build back to his usual self.

Kershaw was having a little bit of a rough stretch before hitting the IL in July. Over his final 7 starts, he got tagged for 19 earned runs over 42 innings of work. He also issued 9 walks across that stretch, which is a bit unusual for him.

But he’s back now and healthy for the Dodgers. To make room for him on the active roster, the club had to designate outfielder Steven Souza Jr for assignment.
