Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Does What He Always Does When Talking Padres

The Dodgers are the best team in the NL West and the best team in the National League at the moment. After the offseason the front office had and the start of the season the team had, to come this far this quickly is kind of surprising. In Andrew Friedman we trust rings truer than ever.

The Dodgers weren’t supposed to be the better team than the Padres — a team that MLB insider Ken Rosenthal called a “top-heavy, slapped-together collection of imported stars.” San Diego had all that firepower and the Dodgers… had some things to sort through. Yet, through the first six matchups of the season, LA has won five games.

“It’s just good to play good baseball against a team like that,” Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts said on Sunday. “Put some distance between us and them.”

Roberts, as usual, sees the bigger picture and avoids any and all potential bulletin board material for San Diego.

Doc saw all the headlines from the offseason, he heard about it during spring training, he addressed it with various outlets over the last four-plus months. The powerhouse Padres were the favorites. They were going to steamroll the Dodgers after slaying the dragon last October. But Dave always likes his guys.

“I don’t think we ever felt we were the underdogs. Certain people in our clubhouse, probably individually, took it a different way. That’s okay. Whatever fuels them. The most important thing is playing baseball games and seeing who the best team is at the end of the year. I’ve always liked our club.”

It feels like Roberts has grown more than ever this season so far. He’s not giving in to the media narrative at all. He’s sticking to an underlying game plan of staying out of the headlines.

A year ago he made the bold proclamation that the Dodgers would win the World Series in 2022. One year later he opted for the muted approach to the same question and it seems like the “target on the back” of the team and the pressure that comes with it isn’t as apparent.
