Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Forgot to Tell Miguel Vargas the Good News

Miguel Vargas making the Opening Day roster was one of the bigger locks of spring for the Dodgers. The Dodgers were consistently working him at second base — a position they had a major need — and getting him reps even when he wasn’t able to swing the bat due to a right pinky injury.

Then, when he was finally allowed to swing, he instantly started raking, and proved that he was ready to take the big leagues by storm.

While Vargas was such a lock to make the roster, and the Dodgers had many other more pressing questions, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts forgot to ever inform Vargas that he was going to be on the Opening Day roster. Vargas, a rookie, didn’t get the usual call into the office that other rookies got. Instead, he had to ask Roberts his status, which kind of surprised the Dodgers manager (per J.P. Hoornstra of the Orange County Register).

“I sort of maybe dropped the ball a little bit,” Roberts said. “It was assumed he was going to be on the team. I didn’t feel the need to call him in, so he was asking about what his status is going into the Freeway Series. I said, ‘you’re going to be starting at second base this year, congratulations.'”

It’s almost cute that Vargas didn’t want to assume anything regarding his spot on the roster. I think everyone around the team knew he was going to be the team’s starting second baseman, but Vargas didn’t want to take anything for granted. He just continued to focus on improving his game, and hoped it would be enough to land him on the Opening Day roster.

Well, it did more than that, as Vargas is going to be the team’s starting second baseman, and play a majority of the team’s games there. He’s going to have a full runway to have a massive year for the Boys in Blue, and I expect him to completely take off.

Don’t be surprised if Vargas’ name is in the conversation for the National League Rookie of the Year Award this year. He’s going to be that good.
