Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Proud of How LA Played in the First Half of Season

The 2023 season for the Los Angeles Dodgers has been full of both ups and downs. The offense has been steady and has carried this squad all year. The team’s pitching staff has been uncharacteristically poor and it has caused some very frustrating moments along the way. They have dropped many games that they should have won and it caused them to drop in the standings.

And yet, despite all the issues that have gone wrong and all the injuries that this team has seen, they still find themselves in a familiar spot. They are tied for first place within the NL West division and have battled back to stay within a spot to have the first-round bye in the postseason.

The team has fought their way through and it has tested them unlike in previous seasons. But this could end up being a good thing depending how the season turns out. Manager Dave Roberts gave his thoughts on the team and how they battled all season.

“I’m proud of our guys. I thought they fought through adversity, they stayed together and we finished on a good note.”

Roberts has taken his own share of criticism this season and in the past but through everything, he has helped keep this team together. Almost every pitcher they have has been hurt at some point and they have relied on rookies and young players all season. The team has also seen production come from some guys that they weren’t expecting much from, David Peralta and Jason Heyward.

Both were brought in this season to compete for roles but both have carved out nice spots on the roster this season. Peralta is hitting .283 with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in. It’s his best start to a season since 2020 and the Dodgers are welcoming it with open arms.

As for Heyward, he is hitting .254 with eight home runs and 22 runs batted in. Heyward hit one home run all of last season and he seems to have found a home here in LA.

Both of these players are examples of how the Dodgers have fought through everything this season. Injuries and inconsistent play from others allowed them more chances and they have earned their roles on the team and contributed in a big way.

As the second half of the season gets going, Roberts just wants his guys to keep going and to get healthy. They should be getting some players back soon and others at a later date.

“For me, it’s just get healthy and play the way we played in the first half.”

Per SNLA

All in all, despite all the frustrations of the season, it has been another solid year for LA. With the trade deadline coming up, they have a chance to really make some moves and improve this roster to give them a better chance come October.
