Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Talks Confidence in Bobby Miller Starting Postseason Game

As the year starts to wind down, the Dodgers find themselves in a luxury position where they can tinker with things to see if they will stick for the playoffs. They have already wrapped up the NL West division, so now it’s just about getting things corrected for the postseason.

The team has dealt with a ton of adversity throughout the year, especially from their pitching staff. But they have persevered and found ways to move forward.

One of those ways has been relying on multiple rookies to help stabilize things. It isn’t what any team wants to do, but it’s what has had to happen for LA this season. The silver lining in it all is that they got to see what some of their young arms could do in the big leagues.

The one that stood out among the rest has been rookie Bobby Miller. Miller has the look of a future ace for LA, and manager Dave Roberts has even said that he has earned the chance to start one of the opening games in the playoffs.

Roberts also spoke recently about his confidence level in Miller when handing him the ball come playoff time in a few weeks.

“We’ve just never seen a player that in every start he makes, he’s gotten better and grown on some part of this game.”

This is high praise for the rookie, but extremely justified after the season he has put together. Since being called up in May, Miller has been one of the best pitchers for the Dodgers, and he has continued to get better each start.

On the year, he has an ERA of 4.02 over 19 starts. He has also struck out 99 batters in 107.1 innings pitched. Roberts continued praising his young pitcher.

“Obviously you see the stuff there. There is a toughness there, there’s a compete, and there is a growth in being able to handle adversity and manage his emotions.”

One of the biggest parts of Miller has been how he has been able to stay calm on the mound. Sometimes rookie pitchers can get rattled as the year goes on, but Miller has stayed poised and collected throughout.

It has helped him really grow as a player, and he now has the Dodgers confidence in him. If he continues to perform like he has, the Dodgers will be in great shape for the playoffs, and Miller seems ready to help lead them.
