Dodgers Prospect Michael Busch Named Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America

Michael Busch has been named Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year for his outstanding 2023 season.

After a back-and-forth season by Busch that saw him get called up to the Los Angeles Dodgers multiple times, Busch continued to stick to it and keep raking in Triple-A.

For the 2023 season in Triple-A Busch hit a .323 average with a 1.031 OPS. In 94 games with the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Busch had 121 hits, 25 doubles, 24 home runs, 61 walks, and 84 RBIs.

The talent of Michael Busch is there for the Los Angeles Dodgers but due to his position, he seems to be stuck behind veterans in the organization.

Listed as a third basemen, Busch is directly behind Max Muncy for the spot at the hot corner. While Muncy may not hit for the prettiest average, he still has 35 home runs and 100 RBIs on the year along with one of the highest walk rates in the MLB.

Busch was noted to move around the infield this year and last year actually playing every game at second base in 2022 for both Minor League teams he was on.

The other role that he could play was the one when J.D. Martinez and Max Muncy got hurt and had to miss time. Busch was called up in both instances and filled the DH role for the Dodgers and he did so kind of poorly.

In 72 at-bats on the year, Busch has hit a .167 average with a .539 OPS, pretty much cutting in half his season totals for 2023 in Triple-A. Busch did hit two home runs and was able to show off his high-graded power but struck out 27 times to only 8 walks.

Michael Busch was sent down once again when Martinez got healthy and was not able to stick around for the expanded September roster.

Busch is full of talent but has struggled to put it together at the Major League level in the little time he has had. Still, he’s a valued piece in the Dodgers organization and may have an important offseason ahead of him this winter.
