Dodgers News: Freddie Freeman Reflects on ‘Mind-Boggling’ 111 Win Season
As you might have heard by now, the Dodgers had a pretty good season. Their 111-51 record is the best in franchise history and tied for fourth-best in AL/NL history, and their +334 run differential is also fourth-best in history. They led the majors in most runs scored and fewest runs allowed, just the second time since integration a team has done that.
How would you describe this season? Wild? Mind-boggling? If you’d use one of those terms, you have something in common with Trea Turner or Freddie Freeman, as Bill Plunkett reports in the Orange County Register.
From Turner:
“Winning 100 games is crazy. The fact that we won 111 is wild.”
From Freeman:
“It is mind-boggling, I think, when you really take a step back and you realize how hard that is to accomplish. A hundred and eleven wins? Sixty games over .500? You gotta be good from start to finish.
“Like Trea said, it’s day games after night games. It’s getting in at 4 a.m. It’s long travel days and for us to keep getting up and grinding and winning that many games over a course of five months, it’s really hard to do. As a group, as a whole, we can appreciate a lot of good things that happened this year.”
Freeman is so fascinating in interviews because he sometimes comes across with kind of an aw-shucks, folksy kind of humility, but he’s also pretty open about recognizing the great things the team has done. And he’s absolutely right about the 2022 regular season being mind-boggling.
As everyone on the team will remind you, there are still 11 important wins left to go this season, but the approach that gave the Dodgers 111 wins in the regular season is part of why they can feel confident heading into the postseason. Sure, everyone starts back at zero in the win column, but that doesn’t mean everyone starts equal. The talent, drive, experience, and focus that helped the Dodgers win 111 games will still be on the roster for the postseason, which gives them a huge advantage.
We have five days to let our minds be boggled by the regular-season success, and then the playoff stress starts.
