Dodgers News: Kolten Wong Open to Any Role Dave Roberts Needs

As the calendar turns September, it means that the baseball season is almost coming to an end. It’s now time for expanded rosters to take their place, and teams to make one last push toward the postseason.

For the Dodgers, they hold a sizeable lead in the NL West, so they have the luxury to work around different things on the roster. But the team did make some call-ups as the rosters expanded.

One of those was veteran infielder Kolten Wong. Wong recently signed with the team and has spent a few games in Triple-A. He saw success during his time there, and LA believed it warranted a call-up.

Prior to the game against the Atlanta Braves on Friday, Wong spoke with reporters about his conversation with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and his role going forward with the team.

“I told him, ‘whatever he needs.’ I’m not here to hold myself to any standard. I’m here to be a Dodger and do what I gotta do to help the team win, contribute any way I can. Baserunning. Defense. Whatever it takes. These guys have been playing good ball — they’ve been doing what they gotta do — so I’m not trying to do anything but just step in line and help out.”

This shows a team-first mindset when it comes to how Wong is approaching this opportunity. He probably understands that he may have not had this chance to return to the big leagues this season, so he is grateful.

LA has shown a team-oriented mentality all year long, so at least so far, the veteran fits right into the culture of the team. LA has been careful about who they have brought in this season, because of the strong chemistry that this version of the Dodgers has shown.

Wong was given one at-bat against the Braves, and he made the most of it. He lifted a three-run home run in the game, which ended up being the only LA runs of the game. It was great to see and hopefully, this is a sign of things to come for the infielder.

Wong spent time with the Seattle Mariners this season but struggled at the plate. He has had a history of strong seasons in the big leagues, so LA decided to give him a chance.

If Wong can make any sort of impact down the stretch, it would be huge for the team. Even if he can be an extra body to help others get some rest as the season winds down, it would be a major help to this team.
