Dodgers News: After Years of Platoon Struggles for Roberts, Everyone Has Finally Bought In

As the season has gone on for the Dodgers, they have started to figure out how to win ballgames in multiple ways. It has been impressive to see unfold and shows the level of maturity that this roster has talent this season.

They know that they are never out of a game, no matter the score, and that keeps them going. LA has a team full of players who just want to win as a group, and that is a special thing.

They are all working toward a common goal this season, and there are no egos. This has been a problem in the past with some teams, especially when guys believed that they deserved more playing time.

LA has been known to use platoon players over the last few seasons, but in this version of the Dodgers, guys know what their roles are. It has helped them take that next step this season, and manager Dave Roberts is thankful.

“The hardest guys to manage in the past have been the platoon guys because they’re always wanting for more [playing time],” Roberts said. “That’s a good thing, as a competitor. But I think the guys now we kind of match up really have bought into it. I think that they all realize that they’re put, and the team’s being put, in the best position to have success.”

Up and down the roster, you’ll find multiple players that other teams disregarded or young players who are trying to prove themselves. The Dodgers do a great job of putting players into the best possible position to succeed, and it has worked out well for their overall success.

Even the newest Dodger, Kolten Wong, spoke with reporters before Friday’s game about being ready to contribute any way the club needs down the stretch saying, “I’m not trying to do anything but just step in line and help out.”

And of course, there is still All-Stars Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman leading the way. Having these two lead by example has only helped the team-first mindset. Roberts knows what has worked for them during the year, and he doesn’t want anyone to overthink anything come playoff time.

“What we’ve done to get here is what we’re going to do throughout the postseason,” Roberts said. “I don’t want to get caught up in overthinking things, reinventing.”

The Dodgers have a special feeling when looking at them this season. Nobody knows how their season will ultimately end, but they have the look of a legit championship-contending ballclub this year.
