Dodgers News: Mookie Betts is Out of Words to Describe Shohei Ohtani
He might have gotten off to a cooler start than expected this season, but Shohei Ohtani is already back to his outstanding self. About one month into the 2024 regular season, Ohtani entered Friday’s game against the Blue Jays leading MLB in total bases and extra-base hits. He’s second in hits, slugging percentage, and third in batting average (.358).
No other player came into Friday’s slate of games with double-digit doubles. Ohtani has already broken the MLB record for most home runs by a Japanese-born player, and hit his seventh home run of the season Friday.
Betts is off to a remarkable start of his own this season. He’s first in on-base percentage (.468), second in batting average (.365), sixth in slugging percentage (.625), and first in runs with 26. Still, Betts remains in awe of what Ohtani has done this season, saying there are “no words” to describe Ohtani.
“There’s no more words that can really be said about [Ohtani]. I mean, I have the same words you guys have. When it comes to Ohtani, I can’t really speak on it. Nobody can really do what he does.”

It’s not surprising to see Ohtani, a previous two-time AL MVP and batting champion, leading these categories. In fact, it’s why the Dodgers gave him a record-setting $700 million contract in free agency last offseason. Even so, Ohtani continues to impress his teammates with his performance in each game, as well as everyone around the game.
