Dodgers News: RHP Ryan Brasier Called Up From AAA Amid Multiple Roster Moves

Prior to their opening game of their series with the Angels, the Dodgers made a few roster moves. The team designated pitcher Andre Jackson for assignment, optioned reliever Bryan Hudson and called up pitcher Ryan Brasier to the big league club.

Brasier was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox in mid-may after struggling heavily this season. He played in 20 games for Boston and held an ERA of 7.29 over 21 innings pitched. He was a major part of the 2018 Red Sox championship team but it has been a roller coaster ever since that postseason run.

He signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers in early June and has spent time in Triple-A so far. Brasier made two appearances with Oklahoma City, throwing three scoreless innings and had five strikeouts. Now he gets his shot with the Dodgers, looking to possibly catch on as a piece of the bullpen going forward.

His fastball isn’t anything special, averaging around 96 mph, but he did show a good strikeout rate at 24.3 percent and a 4.9 walk rate percent just last season. The numbers dropped in 2023, leading to him being designated for assignment by the Red Sox.

If Brasier is able to be effective enough then the Dodgers may have to keep him as an option. Brasier likely won’t be the solution to the bullpen issues. but maybe his experience and working with the Dodgers staff could help revitalize his career.

Their bullpen has been poor all season long and it has caused manager Dave Roberts to search for answers from anywhere he can find them. As a whole, the bullpen is towards the bottom of the league in combined ERA and the hope is that things will improve as the season goes on. This team hasn’t been this bad pitching wise in a long time so they are currently in unfamiliar territory.

Los Angeles begins a two game series with the Angels on the road before heading home for a three-game matchup with the defending champion Houston Astros. The team needs to start picking up wins, so the series against the Angels could help set the tone for the week. We’ll see if Brasier — the former Angel — gets into a game this week.
