Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin’s Return Set, A Look at the Week Ahead for LA

It’s time for the Cat Man! The Dodgers are set to welcome back 2022 NL All-Star Tony Gonsolin this week, barring any setbacks. Ahead of LA’s 7-3 win over the Cubs on Sunday, Gonsolin was spotted at Wrigley Field leading to questions for Dave Roberts.

“He’s here for a purpose.” Roberts said. “A likely possibility for Tony to start on Wednesday makes sense. … He feels good about it, he’s on board with where he’s at as far as the build up and he’s the best option right now.”

Gonsolin would be taking the spot in the rotation that belonged to Michael Grove who hit the injured list this week with a groin strain. Grove took the spot of Ryan Pepiot, who is dealing with an oblique issue and is not expected back until some time in June. Pepiot was set to take the rotation spot of… Tony Gonsolin who rolled his ankle in drills early in spring training.

Tony made one minor league rehab start last week, going 4 innings at the Triple-A level, allowing 2 runs while throwing 57 pitches. He’s expected to go about 4 innings and 60 pitches in his 2023 debut on Wednesday.

Additional Injury News

More reinforcements could be joining Gonsolin soon after. Shortstop Miguel Rojas, who is recovering from a hamstring strain, is expected to rejoin the roster by the time the Dodgers get back to LA on Friday. He went through a full workout on Sunday and took batting practice on the field.

“He’s pretty encouraged about being ready when needed,” Roberts said.

Catcher Will Smith, who is bouncing back from a concussion suffered nearly two weeks ago is stringing together “good days” and could also be back in the lineup as soon as Friday.

“Just have to let the brain heal,” Smith said. “There really is no way to know (how long it will take to recover from a concussion). Sometimes it’s two days. Sometimes it’s two weeks.”
