Dodgers Place Julio Urias on Injured List, Wander Suero Called Up, How Will LA Replace Urias?

The hits keep coming for the Dodgers. After relative consistency in the starting rotation over the first month-ish of the season, the last few weeks have been unkind. Keeping with that theme, today the team announced Julio Urias would be heading to the 15-day injured list with a hamstring strain. Wander Suero takes his spot on the active roster.

It’s uncertain if the hamstring injury caused Julio’s issues in St. Louis on Thursday night, but either way he’ll get time for a mental reset and a physical reset on the IL.

Urias has a 5-4 record with a 4.39 ERA in 10 starts so far this season. He’s allowed an MLB-high 14 home runs over 55.1 innings.

Suero joins the team for his second tour of duty. In 3 appearances earlier this month, the veteran right-hander allowed 3 earned runs over 4.2 innings of work. He was excellent in his last appearance, tossing 2 scoreless innings behind 7 dominant innings from Clayton Kershaw in a win in Milwaukee. Suero has a 1.32 ERA in 12 Triple-A outings this year.

How Will the Dodgers Replace Julio Urias?

Injuries are never well timed, but the timing of the Urias injury couldn’t be too much worse after the team lost right-hander Dustin May to the IL earlier this week and he stands to miss at least a month or two resting a forearm flexor strain. Top prospect Gavin Stone was already set to join the rotation in May’s place but now the Dodgers will need to figure out how to fill Julio’s spot on the staff.

Injured rookie Michael Grove is set to head out on a minor league rehab assignment and could be an option. He’s missed the last month with a groin issue. Additionally, number one pitching prospect Bobby Miller could be an option to make his MLB debut in the coming weeks. The 24-year-old put together his best start of the season so far on Wednesday, allowing 1 run over 6 innings at AAA.

RHP Landon Knack (number 18 prospect) is another option along with 33-year-old journeyman Matt Andriese.
