Dodgers Roster: LA Claims Outfielder from Miami Marlins

The end of the World Series marks the beginning of the official MLB off-season, but even with free agency two days away it doesn’t stop the Dodgers from making some early moves. The Dodgers add some depth into the outfield by claiming Marlins outfielder Luke Williams to their roster.

The 26-year-old outfielder will be entering his third season in the MLB after spending last season with the Giants and Marlins. Williams appeared in 79 games in 2022, hitting .243 with one home run, and 6 RBI. He also stole 11 bases in 15 attempts.

At the minor league level, the speedster has played all around the diamond with most of his time coming at third base (307 career games at the hot corner). In parts of 7 seasons, Williams owns a .241/.315/.338 triple slash line with 24 HR, 82 doubles, 109 stolen bases, and 174 RBI over 486 games.

Williams was also part of Team USA for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, although he was unable to participate in the games in Tokyo after being called up by the Phillies in May of 2021. He did play during the qualifying rounds, going 8-18 (.444) with a double, triple, and a home run. He drove in 6 runs in 4 games.

The move doesn’t provide the game changing news Dodgers fans immediately hoped for, but this also shows a positive sign of things to come as the Dodgers are active and ready to make moves. It remains to be seen how Williams will be utilized, but from face value he will provide another depth piece for a club that loves versatility.

There’s plenty of work left to be done for the team and Williams provides another piece the Dodgers can use with players likely being traded or released or may even provide more pieces for the front office to use to make more enticing deals. If Williams doesn’t get moved, it’s never a wrong move to bring in some youth to a championship aspired roster.
