Dodgers Rumors: Insider Proposes Blockbuster Trade to Get Mike Trout, Patrick Sandoval in LA

All of the talk surrounding the Dodgers this offseason has been about them going after Angels two-way Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani is the big fish on the free agency market, but if he decides to not come to LA, the Dodgers will need to pivot their plan.

One option could be going after the other Angels star player, Mike Trout. There have been reports that the Angels could move Trout this offseason if he were to ask for a trade, and if that happens, LA could approach them.

While it remains unlikely the Angels move Trout, and even more unlikely that owner Arte Moreno would trade him to the Dodgers, it could be something to look into. Trout is a multi-time MVP, and he could help them stabilize their outfield next to Mookie Betts.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed multiple trade packages for Trout if he were to be moved, with one of them sending him up the I-5 freeway to Los Angeles. In the deal, Rymer has the Dodgers getting Trout, starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval and $70 million to put toward the remaining contract of Trout. In return, the Angels would get pitcher Tony Gonsolin and catching prospect Dalton Rushing.

“Would a team as risk-averse as the Dodgers really choose now as the time to pursue Trout? For that matter, would Dodgers-averse Angels owner Arte Moreno allow such a thing?”

Per Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report

For LA, they would get Trout and a pitcher in Sandoval, who has shown some flashes of brilliance so far in his career. The left-handed pitcher holds an ERA of 4.48 on the season, but he did put up an ERA of 2.91 over 27 games last season. If the Dodgers could pull the trigger on this deal, they likely would.

“He and Betts played together at this year’s World Baseball Classic and generally seem tight. Otherwise, contenders don’t get more consistent than the Dodgers.”

Per Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report

On the surface, this deal looks good for the Dodgers, but the Angels could likely get more for their star player. Rushing would be a solid get for them, but they already have catcher Logan O’Hoope on their roster. Plus, Gonsolin will be coming off Tommy John Surgery, so the Halos may not want to deal with that.

It’s an interesting proposition here, but an unlikely one at best. However, never say never, because weirder things have happened in sports history.

  1. This proposal has a lot to be desired, lopsided in favor of the Dodgers. I’m a Dodgers fan just to get that out of the way.

A more realistic trade would include the likes of James Outman, and a healthy controllable starting pitching, like Gavin Stone and/or Ryan Pepiot, along with cash and maybe a throw away relief pitcher or farm system player with no way up into the organization… a first basemen perhaps. If the Angels wanna get greedy, they can try and get Bobby Miller instead of those other too, but then Dodgers throw less money into the deal.

    1. It doesn’t seem like this deal proposal is well thought out. It’s way to lopsided. Angels don’t need catching, they need pitching(and of course a new owner and front office).
Dodgers could use a good right handed hitting outfielder but they also need Pepiot, Miller, Sheehan. The Dodgers could give some good pitching prospects from AA but the Angels need major ready pitching unless they are ready to be horrible another couple of years while they wait for them to develop.
Instead they could keep Sandoval, sign Snell and another pitcher, and play Fletcher like they should have all year. But their biggest problem is organizational culture.

  2. As a very long time Dodger fan, I feel like Dodger fans don’t appreciate what the Dodgers have accomplished this season. At best , they were to only challenge San Diego for the NL West crown. Obviously, they exceeded that by a huge margin. Now, we all hope for a World Series championship. With the pitching staff now in place, I can’t see that being very promising. Although the “kids” are pitching very well, I doubt that they can maintain the consistency needed throughout the playoffs. I certainly hope I’m wrong. But, as I already mentioned, let’s really appreciate their accomplishments and hope for the best.

  3. This is completely ridiculous. There is ZERO chance Arte Moreno would trade Trout to the Dodgers (so Angels fans could watch daily as Trout does in LA what he never had a chance to do in Anaheim), and especially not for a catching prospect and a guy who won’t pitch until 2025.

Articles like this completely destroy the credibility of the sites that post them.

    1. Arte will add to his baseball resume and trade HOF Mike Trout to the Dodgers, further degrade the Angels pitching staff, and watch the Dodgers sign HOF Shohei Ohtani. Now we know why he renamed his team the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
