Dodgers Rumors: LA Will ‘Make a Play’ on Shohei Ohtani in Free Agency; 3 Other Teams Listed in Pursuit

Everyone around the Dodgers knows what the ultimate goal for the team is this winter: Sign two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. There isn’t any sugarcoating it and the team expects to put together a major offseason with Ohtani as the big prize.

They held off doing much of anything last winter, so they could keep their books clean to make an aggressive run at the superstar. And now we are just a few months away from the Dodgers possibly realizing their long-term plan.

Of course, Ohtani has to want to play in LA, but the Dodgers do provide him with everything he has wanted. They can pay him the historic amount of financial compensation that he will be looking for, and they are a consistent winning organization that gives him a chance each year to win a title.

LA will have some competition for his services, but even with Ohtani having a torn UCL, LA still plans to make a run at him. Insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post lays out some of the latest reporting on Ohtani.

“The Cubs are a team that can afford him. But the question is: Will they spend that big? The Angels and Dodgers both will make a play, sources say. Most are writing off the incumbent team, but Ohtani did put together three extraordinary seasons over there.”

Per The NY Post

There will be a ton of teams lining up to go after Ohtani, but not all will be able to give him what he wants. He is prioritizing winning above all else, and only a handful of teams have consistently won in this league.

While LA has known they would have suitors in this race, Heyman did link another team with the superstar. This could have some real connections, and the Dodgers may have to beat them out to get Ohtani.

“Shohei Ohtani and the Red Sox are starting to be linked more and more. One executive with an interested team said he believes they are a real threat. If the Red Sox do land Ohtani, maybe their faithful forget Mookie Betts. For a little while, anyway.”

Per Jon Heyman of The NY Post

The Red Sox just finished their season in last place once again, making that three of the last four years. While they have won a World Series in the last handful of years, they also haven’t won at a consistent rate. So, Ohtani may not want to go through a roller coaster of winning for the rest of his career.

It remains to be seen what Ohtani will do, or where he will sign. But the Dodgers seem determined to land him, and normally that turns out well for the Boys in Blue.
