Dodgers Sign Former Padres All-Star Pitcher to Minor League Deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed former San Diego Padres All-Star left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz to a minor league deal, per Triple-A OKC Baseball’s Broadcaster and Communications Director Alex Freedman.

Pomeranz, 35, was with the Los Angeles Angels on a minor league deal in spring training, but was released before Opening Day.

The Dodgers worked fast to pick him up, and now have added him to the minor league roster.

Pomeranz made nine appearances this spring and allowed five earned runs across eight innings of work for a 5.63 ERA.

Pomeranz last played in Major League Baseball in 2021 when he was with the Padres.

After getting off to a dominant 2021 season — in which he had a 1.75 ERA in 27 appearances — Pomeranz underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon.

Pomeranz then missed the entire 2022 season and the entire 2023 season rehabbing and recovering. He also underwent an additional surgery in May of 2023, which then-Padres manager Bob Melvin called a “cleanup procedure.”

Pomeranz was finally healthy again in 2024, and got an opportunity with the Angels.

However, after not making their Opening Day roster, he went back to free agency, and has now latched on with the Dodgers.

Who is Drew Pomeranz?

Pomeranz began his career back in 2011 with the Colorado Rockies.

He’s spent time with the Rockies, Oakland Athletics, Padres, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers at the MLB level.

He has a career 3.91 ERA in 289 games (140 starts) across his 11 seasons.

He was mainly a starter until 2019, and transitioned to being a full-time reliever in his second stint with the Padres in 2020 and 2021.

In his career as a reliever, Pomeranz has a 2.42 ERA in 160 innings.
