Dodgers’ Utility Man Chris Taylor Unsure of His Role Next Season

The Los Angeles Dodgers have very few holes on their roster. In fact, they have an embarrassment of riches heading into the 2024 season. While the current makeup of the roster is stacked all across the board, it does mean some players will enter the season unsure of their role.

Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Chirs Taylor is one of those players who falls under the aforementioned category. In a recent interview with our own Doug McKain, Taylor said he is unsure what his role will look like in 2024.

“We obviously have a lot of guys at all positions. And this isn’t anything new for me,” Taylor said to McKain. “I think it’s really hard to predict exactly where I’ll be. I think so much of it has to do with who’s available, who’s playing well. My thing has always been I can kind of play all over. So if somebody goes down with an injury, I’m able to fill in that spot.”

He did add that he’s happy to do whatever is best for the team.

“Whatever’s best for the team,” Taylor said. “Who’s playing well, who’s slumping a little bit. I can fill in there. There’s really no predicting. I think this year, when you look at it now, I’m not sure what position I’ll be at, and time will tell I guess.”

Taylor played all over the place in 2023, spending time at left field, center field, shortstop, third base, second base, and designated hitter. In his career, he’s played everywhere except first base, catcher and pitcher.

The one-time All-Star has done it all for the Boys in Blue, and it appears it won’t be any different in 2024. Taylor spent the majority of his time in left field last year, appearing in 60 games. He’ll likely find himself in the outfield a majority of the time, unless he needs to help out at shortstop for Gavin Lux as he returns from a torn ACL.

With the current makeup of the roster, it may be find for Taylor to find consistent at-bats against right-handed pitching. But for now, he’ll continue to play the super utility role that has made him so valuable.
