Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that All-Star catcher Will Smith is dealing with an ankle issue and “a little behind” schedule. He said Smith has been running on an Alter-G treadmill as he looks to get healthy in time for the start of the season.
For what it’s worth, The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reported that Smith was catching Tyler Glasnow’s bullpen session on Friday, and is on the schedule for a live batting practice session, too. Thus, it doesn’t appear to be too serious of an issue for the Dodgers backstop.
Smith is coming off a 2024 season in which he slashed .248/.327/.433 with 20 home runs and 75 runs batted in. He made his second consecutive All-Star team, and has emerged as one of the game’s premier catchers.
Behind Smith, the Dodgers have the always reliable Austin Barnes at catcher. Then, on the 40-man roster, L.A. also has Hunter Feduccia.
Smith has a month to get up to speed and ready for the start of the season. The Dodgers open their season on March 18 and 19 in Japan, and then return to the United States for domestic Opening Day on March 27.
