Former Dodgers Pitcher Reacts to Andrew Toles News, Praises Organization

This week, it was revealed that former Dodgers OF Andrew Toles was still under contract with the team. The reason he still had a contract has nothing to do with baseball. Rather, it’s about the Dodgers looking out for Toles, as he struggles with mental health issues. The Dodgers want to make sure he has good health insurance, and gets the support he needs to deal with his struggles. It’s a class act move by the Dodgers, and something they’ve done for the past four years.

The story made headlines this week all over social media, and understandably so. It’s not often you see a sports organization treat their players as humans, and truly take care of someone who needs the help.

Former Dodger RHP Tom Koehler is another instance of the Dodgers treating the players well, without something in return. Koehler signed with the team ahead of the 2017 season. During spring training of that year, he suffered a shoulder injury, and ended up being shut down for the beginning of the season. Then, in July, he underwent season-ending surgery, and never suited up for the team.

However, even though Koehler never played for the team, he made it clear how well he was treated by the organization — even when he was hurt and had nothing to give.

After the Toles story came out, Koehler made sure to go to social media to praise the Dodgers, and let everyone know that this kind gesture from them doesn’t surprise him at all.

“I love this. Saw it first hand how they treated me when I could provide nothing for them. I am not surprised they are helping Andrew. It’s bigger [than] sports.”

It’s very easy for people to forget that athletes are human beings, but it’s nice to see an organization like the Dodgers continuing to treat everyone well, even if they aren’t going to contribute to wins or financial gain.

The Dodgers continue to be an organization above the rest, for both how they play on the field, but also how they treat their people off the field. Koehler and Toles are just two of the likely many examples of the Dodgers putting the human before the game.

  1. I’ve been a life-long Dodger fan for the 57 years of my existence and the kindness from this top-notch organization doesn’t surprise me. Going beyond their call of duty further solidifies my love for the team. God Bless them all!
