Former Dodgers Top Prospect Cut By New Team After Just 4 Games

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins made a trade last offseason, sending Miguel Rojas to L.A. for a shortstop prospect. On Tuesday, that shortstop prospect was designated for assignment by the Marlins after just four games at the MLB level.

Shortstop Jacob Amaya, who was ranked as high as the Dodgers’ No. 10 prospect in 2021 per MLB Pipeline, was DFA’d on Tuesday when the Marlins acquired infielder Emmanuel Rivera from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash.

Amaya, 25, made his debut with the Marlins last June, and only made four appearances, going 2-for-9 with two runs batted in.

Now, a little less than 15 months after joining Miami, he’s heading back on waivers and will look for his next home.

Amaya was drafted by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of West Covina, CA.

He worked his way up to Triple-A in 2022, and was looking like a future shortstop for the Dodgers.

However, when Rojas became available, the Dodgers decided to add the veteran depth. That decision ended up paying off in spades when Gavin Lux tore his ACL, and Rojas was thrust into a starting shortstop role last year.

This year, Rojas is continuing to fill in at shortstop from time to time (now for Mookie Betts), and his bat has already made an instant impact with a home run in his first start of the season.

As for Amaya, he’ll look to find his next home this week. If he clears waivers, the Dodgers could try to bring him back to the organization.
