Freeman missed both Games 5 and 6 of the National League Championship series against the New York Mets because of an ankle injury. However, the Dodgers earned a 4-2 triumph over the Mets that concluded Sunday night.

Freeman will now have a few days of rest to be ready for Game 1 of the World Series, which kicks off Friday, Oct. 25 at Dodger Stadium. Freeman initially suffered an ankle sprain in late September, and doctors told him the injury would normally require a 4-6 week stint on the injured list. However, 10 days later, Freeman was in the lineup for NLDS Game 1. He hasn’t been himself, though.

In his absence, Max Muncy was asked to fill in at first base. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts heaped high praise for Muncy’s work at the plate as well as his ability to switch from third to first.

“I think there’s a lot said about what Kiké does in the postseason, but Max is a guy that throughout his postseasons with us, he finds a different gear as well,” Roberts said. “He’s an on-base machine. He controls the strike zone.

“And for him to pivot from third base to first base, which he hadn’t played in a few years, also speaks to his ability and his talent. And it’s not easy to make up for a loss of Freddie Freeman, but Max has been able to help us make that transition a little bit easier.”

As the champagne showers concluded, the Dodgers now shift their focus to taking down the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic. The Yankees announced former Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole will get the Game 1 start for New York.

The Dodgers won the National League pennant Sunday night, but there is more to be done. The Dodgers need just four more wins to get their first ring since 2020.

“Obviously we’re going to celebrate tonight, as we should,” Roberts said. “I think the whole world was looking forward or hoping for this potential match-up, this showdown.”

The last time the Dodgers faced the Yankees in the World Series was in 1981. The 1981 Dodgers beat New York in six games after facing a 0-2 deficit.

“It’s going to be great,” Roberts said. “They’re a very talented team. But I think for us, it’s kind of one game at a time but appreciating the fact that we’ve still got four wins to take care of business.”
