It’s unclear why Betts was scratched from the lineup. However, Betts has not played for the Dodgers since Cactus League because of an illness. He did not play in the Tokyo Series and even left Japan early to recover.
Last week, manager Dave Roberts said the Dodgers were hopeful he will be ready for Opening Day; however, the last-minute turn of events have raised concerns.
“I think that we’re really trying to be mindful of not just Opening Day but not putting him in harm’s way,” Roberts said. “He hasn’t taken live at-bats or played in any games (in a week) and not to put him in a position where he potentially could get hurt.
Betts is making an unprecedented transition to shortstop this season, and it’s paramount he is at 100 percent health to play the new position. While missing the first game of the Freeway Series isn’t ideal, the goal is for him to be in domestic Opening Day lineup against the Detroit Tigers.
