Less than a month after hoisting the Commissioner’s Trophy, the Dodgers headlined the winter with their signing of two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell. The left-hander’s five-year, $182 million deal left baseball fans reeling.
The Dodgers continued acquiring some of the best talent on the market, and the groaning from most the of the baseball world continued. The narrative that the Dodgers are ruining baseball emerged.
President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said the front office did not consider its critics when making decisions, rather the priority was to reward the Dodgers fanbase.
“I think I look at it from the other side,” Friedman said. “The inverse of that hopefully means that our fans are really happy.
“From our standpoint, that’s our only mission: to do everything we can to be great stewards of this organization and to reward our incredibly passionate fans.”
While there have been many critics, there have been far less supporters. Nonetheless, two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper praised the Dodgers for their lucrative spending.
“I don’t know if people will like this, but I feel like only losers complain about what they’re doing. I think they’re a great team,” Harper said ahead of the series opener against the Dodgers. “They’re a great organization.”
Like a true competitor, Harper spoke highly of his National League rivals. The Philadelphia Phillies star took care of business on the diamond instead as the Dodgers suffered their first loss of the season with a 3-2 defeat.
Although the Dodgers’ loss stung, Harper’s compliment of the defending champions speaks volumes to his character.
