Shohei Ohtani Surpasses Dave Roberts For Most HRs By Japanese-Born Player in Dodgers History
On an 0-1 count in the bottom of the third inning, Shohei Ohtani launched himself into the Los Angeles Dodgers record books with his eighth home run of the season against the Atlanta Braves.
The record was seven and held by manager Dave Roberts, who couldn’t help but smile as the camera panned to his face while Ohtani jogged around the bases. Ohtani is now the franchise leader for home runs by a Japanese-born player.
Before Saturday’s game, Ohtani gifted Roberts a toy Porsche to commemorate tying his record. He already holds Major League Baseball’s record for the same category.
Ohtani has faced a mountain of scrutiny through the first month of this season. He has struggled with runners in scoring position and his former interpreter was fired for stealing more than $16 million from the two-way superstar.
From Saturday on, Dodger fans and players have a front-row seat to history whenever Ohtani hits a homer and hopefully, there are plenty more to come.
