Shohei Ohtani Sweepstakes Reportedly Down to 4 Teams, Including the Dodgers

We are a few weeks into free agency and the Dodgers are still alive in the race to sign two-way superstar free agent Shohei Ohtani. LA has long been thought of as the favorite to sign him, and the sweepstakes for him may be down to only a few teams.

MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN confirmed that the Dodgers were still in the bidding for Ohtani, along with three others: the Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays and the incumbent Los Angeles Angels.

“Among those confirmed by sources to still be in the bidding: the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays and Angels.”

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN

We have heard that the Cubs and Blue Jays were real threats to the Dodgers for Ohtani, and this report only confirms that. Both teams have positioned themselves well to go after Ohtani, and there is a case to be made for each.

As for the Angels, he could always return to the place where he has spent the last six seasons. But Ohtani has made it clear that he wants to win, and it’s not likely much will change with the Halos going forward.

Between these teams, the Dodgers fit the bill as the organization that can provide him with a chance to win the World Series every single season. They have built up the franchise in a way that supports sustainable winning, and that is something that appeals to someone like Ohtani.

With the winter meetings starting next week, we could be very close to a decision from the two-way superstar. Fans have been waiting for something to happen, and it feels like we aren’t too far off from getting the bombshell report of where he will sign.

The hope is that it will be with the Dodgers, and it would be the biggest signing in franchise history. Ohtani is the biggest star in the game today and would be a home-run addition to this team for years to come.
