Super Agent Scott Boras Has High Praise for Dodgers Ownership
Scott Boras and the Los Angeles Dodgers have rarely come together on free agent deals. Before James Paxton and J.D. Martinez signed with the Dodgers the past two offseasons on very modest $10 million and $7 million deals, respectively, the last Boras client to sign with L.A. was Hyun-Jin Ryu back in 2012 on a six-year, $36 million deal.
Boras has dominated MLB offseasons for years, bringing in well over $1 billion in total value in the 2022 offseason alone. However, those big deals haven’t come with the Dodgers — even though Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger are among the Dodgers’ homegrown Boras clients.
This offseason, Boras hasn’t seen as much success, as Bellinger and Matt Chapman were forced to take shorter term deals, and Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery remain unsigned with the MLB regular season kicking off in a week.
But in a bit of a surprise move from Boras, he recently had some praise for the Dodgers’ organization.
Speaking with Texas Rangers beat writer Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Boras went out of his way to praise Dodgers owner Mark Walter for making sizable investments in the wake of their 2020 World Series run.
“There always comes a litmus test for a franchise and it usually comes after the first world championship. If you sustain that championship level, you build the kind of legacy that few do. The Dodgers and Astros, for example, have always made the kind of move that is most difficult – the last one to a championship level for that season and beyond. It’s the kind of move that requires some [financial] flexibility in the moment; however it’s the kind of move that separates them from one-and-done champs to championship legacy.”

Snell has been linked to the Dodgers this offseason, but Boras’ comments are more of a wink to the Texas Rangers’ front office.
The Rangers have three pitchers — Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle — who will all be out for the first half of the 2024 season. And even though a reunion with World Series hero Montgomery makes sense, the Rangers have declined to do it.
Boras is using the Dodgers and Houston Astros as examples of teams who were able to build sustained success due to their aggressive front offices.
Boras is somewhat urging the Rangers to do the same as they look to repeat as World Series champions.
