Andrew Friedman on New Dodgers Pitcher Tyler Glasnow: ‘I Don’t Know How Anyone Hits Him’

Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow has spoken at length about his excitement to play for his childhood team. The right-hander is scheduled to be the Dodgers starter on Opening Day in Korea, earning that spot by his performance. In three Cactus League games, Glasnow allowed four hits and one run over 10 innings, walked three and struck out 14.

The front office targeted Glasnow early in the offseason, pushing their prospect chips in to land him. He brings some of the best stuff of any pitcher in Major League Baseball — and has one massive fan in the Dodgers’ front office.

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman spoke with USA Today about the Dodgers’ new ace, saying he doesn’t know how opponents can hit Glasnow based on his skills and stuff.

“I don’t know how anyone hits him. It feels like it’s an accident when someone does. I think he’s really found his footing and has enjoyed the dynamic with our run-prevention group, his teammates, our catchers, and is poised to go out and have a really good year.”

This is quite high praise. Friedman has seen a lot of very talented pitchers during 18 seasons in MLB. The pressure is on Glasnow to deliver on his potential to lead the Dodgers’ starting rotation.

In the past, injuries have held back Glasnow. A left oblique strain limited Glasnow to 120 innings and 21 starts last year. He missed most of the 2021 and 2022 seasons because of a torn right UCL that required Tommy John surgery. Glasnow made just 12 starts in 2019 because of a forearm strain.

Over the last five years, Glasnow has made 60 starts. Now, he’s finally healthy and ready to show what he can do. Based on his outings this spring, Glasnow looks more than ready.

If Glasnow can carry over his success in exhibition games into the regular season, the Dodgers will have gotten a steal in the December trade that sent Ryan Pepiot and Jonny DeLuca to Tampa Bay. They will be counting on him massively this season and hopefully, he can lead them to another World Series victory.
