Dave Roberts Says Shohei Ohtani is Recruiting Yoshinobu Yamamoto to Dodgers

The Dodgers landed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani on a record 10-year, $700 million contract, but they aren’t done yet. Now they have their sights set on addressing their pitching staff, which has been their priority all offseason.

Their big target is Japanese pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who would be an absolute game-changer for the Dodgers starting rotation. He is special on the mound and would give them another front-line ace alongside Tyler Glasnow.

And it seems that the newest member of the Dodgers is recruiting him to join the team. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday that Ohtani is “absolutely” recruiting Yamamoto to come to Los Angeles.

“Absolutely we’re doing that. We’d be crazy not to.”

It’s been reported that the Dodgers pulled out all the stops for their meeting with Yamamoto earlier in the week. This included having multiple players, including Ohtani, attend the pitch to get him into a Dodgers uniform.

Yamamoto and Ohtani were teammates on Team Japan for the World Baseball Classic, and they know each other very well. It’s also been reported previously that Yamamoto would love to play alongside another Japanese star.

“They were teammates. So I do know that Yoshinobu is excited being recruited,” Roberts said. “We hosted him, and I thought we did a really good job and had players there to kind of see what life would look like.”

Roberts’ saying that he believes the team did a good job is similar to his sentiment before they landed Ohtani. We can all hope that the same result takes place, and Yamamoto decides to become a member of the Dodgers.

“So, yeah, they do have a good relationship,” Roberts said of Ohtani and Yamamoto. “So hopefully everything lines up and it would be quite the offseason.”

If the Dodgers are able to land Yamamoto, it would be an incredibly successful offseason. They’ve already got Ohtani and have traded for starter Tyler Glasnow, so this would be the cherry on top. Hopefully, when the dust settles, Yamamoto will be wearing a Dodgers jersey for the foreseeable future.

  1. While the Championship-Dodgers
have their trading hat on they need to dump Roberta and get a real manager.
He’s an EEOC waste of time and space. They coulda shoulda had a handful of rings in the last decade….
Don’t waste Otani in a Bus with a terrible driver who is as dumb as a box of rocks.

      1. I agree totally. Ohtani is a private individual, and I know he’s uncomfortable with Roberts blabbering his mouth off.
I don’t see other managers gossiping to the world about their club’s ongoing.
He better win multiple WS now, like he predicted before, or else sayonara.

    1. Dave Roberts has the highest winning percentage of major league managers across history. He’s not going anywhere.

      1. Roberts is the only weak link on the team.
The Dodgers won so many games in-spite of his ineptness.
Just think how many more game we would have won with a good manager!

      1. Yes, Gene T is showing an unmitigated racist tendency, sadly. Hey, dude, Roberts is also half Japanese. You going to hold that against him, too?

The sense of honor that comes from being Japanese was definitely a positive factor in recruiting Ohtani, and it will factor in a positive way when it comes to Yamamoto. In Japan for many centuries, its culture has valued “honor” as a deep form of respect, and this is intrinsically part of how Roberts was received by both Ohtani and Yamamoto.

Gene T, do you have an ethnic culture that teaches you norms, duties and a sense of honor? If you did, you wouldn’t be attacking other people so indiscriminately..

    2. Yo Gene.. your bus analogy suffers from the logic of a janitor who can’t see the floor through a mop. Who would you suggest? Mr Clean?

    3. You’re clueless about Dave Roberts. Stop pretending you’re a Dodger fan. You were most likely saying the same thing about Andrew Friedman a few days ago.

    4. I really wish you Roberts haters would go somewhere else. I’m sure I’m not the only one that is sick of hearing your hateful and ignorant comments here. Roberts is actually a damn good manager. Yeah he’s not perfect, no manager is. I can’t think of another manager in the sport I’d rather have. The Dodgers have an amazing record with Roberts as manager. That speaks for itself. Roberts didn’t cause all the pitching staff injuries last year. He didn’t cause the Dodger hitter to forget how to hit in the playoffs. Get real!
I blame the current playoff format for the flat performances. If you want complain about something blame the Commissioner for implementing this stupid format along with his other idiot Ideas about the game!

  2. i agree with all the comments, but let me add my own … DR needs to get to the big dance and ma?neu?ver gracefully along the way. hopefully he has matured enough to handle the gigantic responsibility of managing a once in a lifetime ball club. ??

    1. Since MLB assisted the Dodgers by allowing that rediculous contract, why not just cancel the seaspn and award the WS trophy to the Dodgers now.

  4. Lol….a hearty laugh with the dumbass Roberts comments. Double dumbass comments to the person with the EEOC reference. Yes, lets just keep changing Managers every other year (looking at you Mets n Padres ). Has Roberts been perfect, of course not, will he screw up in future, yeah. But he’s one of the best managers in Dodgers’ history. Alston and Lasorda screwed things up sometimes as well. I know because next season is number 55 for me as a Dodgers fan. Was winning 111 games two yrs ago a wasted season/opportunity ; yep sure was. Have the Dodgers been in a window of opportunity these last few years and moving forward- yep sure are. But I’ll trust in Dave Roberts. I mean we could be Angels’ fans ( that organization has now spun off into the abyss…) or Padres’ fans and (always be butt hurt that the Dodgers don’t look at them as their biggest rival ) btw- if SD fans want that , give it another 75 or 80 yrs , and switch your team colors to Black n Orange. My point Roberts is fine and I’m confident he’s the person to lead them through this decade. That’s my 55 yrs as a Dodgers fan speaking. Now let’s go in ’24!

  5. Dave Roberts has the highest winning percentage of major league managers across history. He’s not going anywhere.

    1. Any major league manager would have the winning percentage Roberts has with the talent this club has year in and year out. Difference is, quite a few other managers would have more rings. Roberts is a regular season coach, period.

    2. The postseason is just too fast for Roberts. Other managers play chess while Roberts is playing checkers. Postseason is a different animal compared to the regular season. If he cannot win some World Series now with the support from the management and owners, you can say thanks but adios… aloha… sayonara… bye.
Professional Sports in LA is about winning championships not just winning regular season.

  7. Dave Robert’s is our guy he’s made mistakes, who hasn’t? Our club needs to execute when time is right, what excuse do we have now front office has come through, given what’s been asked!let’s give it this time see what happens

  8. Those who deeply criticize Dave Roberts overlook the fact that he helped to recruit Ohtani and will likely be a positive factor in recruiting Yamamoto. Are you all aware that his mother is from Japan?

There is a deeply held norm in Japanese culture awarding trust to other Japanese people and honoring a mutually felt sense of honor and obligation. This is an unwritten yet extant practice that in my view helped Roberts to recruit Ohtani—and will help encourage Yamamoto to come to the Dodgers, too.

  9. Another Japanese kid, age 23, to be posted next year and his numbers are lights out and throws a fastball at 103. I believe last name is Sasaki.

    1. 2026. Something about service time in the Japan League before posting; five years? But you’re right- 103 plus he’s 6-4, so much bigger and stronger frame.
