Dodgers, Tyler Glasnow Agree To Multi-Year Contract Extension Finalizing Trade With Rays

The Dodgers and right-hander Tyler Glasnow have agreed to finalize a five-year, $135 million contract extension. Glasnow was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to LA on Thursday, but the deal was contingent on him signing an extension with the team.

MLB Insider Jeff Passan of ESPN broke the news of the extension.

LA now gets a front-line starter in Glasnow for the next few years, helping solidify their starting rotation. According to Passan, there is an option in the final year of the contract and there is no deferred money in this deal.

Glasnow was entering the final year of his contract, but the Dodgers weren’t going to trade away two promising young players for one year of control. They moved young right-hander Ryan Pepiot, who had multiple years of control left, and outfielder Jonny Deluca in this trade.

When healthy, Glasnow has some of the best stuff in the game today. But he has had some injury issues over the course of his career. However, he did throw a career-high 120 innings last season, posting an ERA of 3.53.

Glasnow has been the ace of the Rays for a few years now and helped them get to the World Series in 2020. In 10 appearances in the postseason, he holds an ERA of 5.72. This includes two matchups against the Dodgers in the 2020 World Series, where he gave up 10 runs in 9.1 innings of work.

His stats in the postseason do leave some wanting more, but the Dodgers must feel confident in their ability to work with him. Working with pitching coach Mark Prior and the rest of the staff, LA believes that they can turn him into an elite postseason pitcher.

He has the skill set on the mound to cut through a postseason lineup at any given time, so maybe a change of scenery will help. The Dodgers now have their ace-level starter, but this doesn’t mean that they are done adding to the rotation.

The team is still aggressively pursuing Japanese sensation, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, as well as others.

  1. Hmmnn, …..let’s see, the Dodgers acquire a DH with the most expensive contract in professional sports and with no guarantee to be able to pitch effectively ever again, and another expensive pitching acquisition with a history of injuries. These may be moves in the right direction, but time will tell. I’m not necessarily complaining, just skeptical. Can we ever get a healthy, sound, durable starting pitcher after dealing over the years with Kershaw, Buehler, May, and……..?

  2. I’m having a hard time getting to excited about this deal. Like LA42 said above, there’s a lot of iffs!
I hate losing Pepiot. However for his sake he’ll probably get right into the rotation where he’s going.

  3. I have this feeling that Glasnow will end up on the DL hurt most of next year. He will be pitching to a larger home town crowd plus he went to school in the Southland which is very different from the Rays fans. He will try to show how good he is the first few games and by game 3 or 4 he will have damage his arm for over doing it and will need an operation. Mark my words. I also feel Deluca is a better outfielder than Margot. He is younger and faster plus he ripped it up in the minors. Deluca and Busch should not be in any minor system. They are too good. The Dodgers need to use Busch or trade him. If the Dodgers gave Deluca a permanent position on the MLB roster I think he would shine. I just don’t understand the deal for Margot. I feel the Rays only had one year of control with Glasnow and they were not willing to sign him because he would be demanding too much money. I feel the Rays got the better end of this deal. That is why they always do good for a small market team. Just my opinion.

  4. Friedman is one of the slickest GM’s in baseball. I hate to see Pepiot or DeLuca go; but somehow, these transactions he concludes seem to result in us getting to the playoffs every year. And maybe, Pepiot has a telegraph issue. He gave up six home runs in his last 4 appearances. Two in two games and one in the other two. Just something of interest. We should be proud of our Dodgers. Who knew our starting staff would be decimated last year? We still won 100 games. Betts and Freeman went through a slump at the same time and that decided (convincingly) our post season. But now, replace Lynn with Glasnow, Kershaw with Buehler, Martinez with Ohtani. Betts plays second all year. Lux returns to play a decent shortstop; but hits leaps and bounds above Rojas. And Margot for Peralta? Peralta disappeared for part of the year. Rojas can come in in the late innings for defense at second or short. And (hopefully) Clayton and Dustin are back the first of August. Looks good to me. and Friedman is NOT DONE YET!

  5. Overpay, period! I would have been complete satisfied if they had just signed Wacha, Lugo and the Japanese SP not to be confused with Yamamoto (yes, I’m referring to Imanaga)… And it still would cost less than what the D’s gave to Glasnow and with much less risk.
