Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw Provides Major Update on His Health

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw provided a major update on his health just two days after he and the team reached an agreement on a contract that guarantees his 17th season with the team.

Tuesday, the Dodgers and Kershaw agreed to a one-year deal that includes a player option for 2025. Thursday, he addressed reporters for the first time at the team’s Camelback Ranch–Glendale facility.

Kershaw, who underwent surgery back in November to repair the glenohumeral ligaments and capsule in his left shoulder, will not be ready for the beginning of the regular season in March. However, Kershaw did reveal he is now in the second week of his throwing program.

Though Kershaw is not ready to set an exact timetable on his return, he did offer an estimate: “July-ish, August-ish. Somewhere in there. I don’t know,” Kershaw said, as relayed via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group.

While speaking with the media, Kershaw also revealed that getting the surgery was one of the biggest decisions he’s had to make.

“This was really kind of the first offseason where I had some choices to make and it wasn’t easy. But I feel really good about it now. Thankful I got the surgery. Thankful I’m back here. I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Prior to getting the surgery, Kershaw’s injury was clearly affecting the 10-time All-Star’s ability and efficiency. This was most evident during his one postseason appearance for the Dodgers in 2023, when Kershaw gave up six earned runs on six hits while recording only one out in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

It will still be several months before the Dodgers and fans learn how the surgery impacts Kershaw’s ability at age 36, but the obvious hope is for him will return to his normal standard once ready to play.
