Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Already Has a Sculpture: Meet ‘Snowhei’ Ohtani
We’ve all heard of Shohei Ohtani, but what about “Snowhei Ohtani?”
The new Los Angeles Dodgers’ designated hitter and prized $700 million free agent signing was captured in a marvelous snow sculpture at the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan, and posted to social media via Major League Baseball’s official account.
The Sapporo Snow Festival features some of Japan’s most incredible snow sculptures. At the most recent festival, Shohei Ohtani was one of the notable figures to be captured in the snow. Ohtani was sculpted alongside his dog, Decoy (or Dekopin in Japanese).
While this appears to be Decoy’s first appearance in the statue, this is not the first time Ohtani has been made into a snow statue at the Sapporo Snow Festival. Since becoming a star player in Nippon Professional Baseball, Ohtani has regularly been created into a snow statue in his native country.
This statue is just another example of the craze surrounding Ohtani’s arrival to the Dodgers. Fans and the media cannot get enough of the superstar, which was evident with the amount of press awaiting the opportunity to speak to him at DodgerFest. This frenzy should only continue as Spring Training gets underway, and during Opening Day for the Dodgers in Seoul, Korea.
If Ohtani continues on his current trajectory, this won’t be the last statue sculpted of him. In his six-year MLB career, Ohtani is already a two-time American League MVP, a two-time Silver Slugger award winner, and a three-time AL All-Star. Especially If Ohtani can play a major part in the Dodgers winning one or multiple World Series titles, don’t be surprised to see him sculpted outside of Dodger Stadium in bronze one day.
