Dodgers Game Updates vs Angels: Brusdar Graterol Opens, Michael Grove Faces Shohei Ohtani in Mismatch

The Dodgers actually won a baseball game! Clayton Kershaw gave Dave Roberts and the boys in blue just what they needed on Tuesday with 7 shutout innings in a 2-0 win over the Angels. Now LA turns to struggling rookie Michael Grove (0-2, 8.10 ERA) in the upset match up of the season. Grove gets to face two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (6-2, 3.29 ERA).

However, the Dodgers are going with an opener again in Grove’s start, as Brusdar Graterol will pitch the first inning against the top of the Angels lineup. Then Grove will likely enter and pitch as long as he can.

In order to get Grove back on the active roster, the Dodgers had to place RHP Shelby Miller on the 15-day IL with neck pain, something he’s been dealing with ever since getting activated off the bereavement list.

Pitching Matchup

Michael Grove is making his second consecutive game following an opener, and pitching in his 8th game overall. 2023 has been rough for the right-hander as he’s struggled to keep runs off the board and the baseball in the ballpark (team-worst 2.4 HR9). This will be the first time Grove has faced the Angels in his career.

Shohei Ohtani will be making his 15th start of the season and is in the midst of another fine year. He hasn’t been as electric as he was in 2022 when he posted a career-best 2.33 ERA and finished 4th in AL Cy Young voting. Somewhat shockingly, this will be the first time Ohtani has pitched against the Dodgers in his career.
